Evening Birding at Lost Mound National Wildlife Refuge
Meet at the Savanna Inn and Suites. Evening birding occurs at Lost Mound National Wildlife Refuge on the Mississippi River. We will listen for—and hopefully see—owls and Eastern Whip-poor-wills. Dinner will be on our own, but we can coordinate meeting in Savanna before heading to Lost Mound. Snacks and water will be available.
Saturday, May 3, 6:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Mississippi Palisades, Ayres Sand Prairie, and Lock & Dam 13
Breakfast at the hotel. Our first stop is the beautiful forest of Mississippi Palisades State Park. Target species are Cerulean, Kentucky, and Yellow-throated Warblers and other migrants.
After Mississippi Palisades, the next stop is Ayres Sand Prairie and the adjacent Tri-Township Airport to look for Loggerhead Shrike, one of the few places where the species hangs on in northern Illinois.
Our last stop is Lock & Dam 13. Here migrant ducks sometimes linger into May, migrant terns forage over the wetlands, Common Gallinule and Sandhill Crane breed, and Eurasian Tree Sparrows are resident.
We plan to return to Savanna Inn and Suites by 12:00 p.m.
