Milkweed Plugs for Spring 2019 Habitat Projects: With the monarch in decline, planting milkweeds and other nectar sources across the landscape can help support their fantastic tri-national migration. Finding locally appropriate milkweed plants to provide this much-needed habitat can be confusing and frustrating. In response, Monarch Watch has created the Milkweed Market to assist those who are looking for regionally appropriate milkweeds.
Working with partner nurseries in Kansas, Oklahoma, California and Florida, Monarch Watch distributed more than 147,000 milkweed plugs in 2018. Planning for spring 2019 has begun. Preorders and early applications are necessary to help determine how many plants will be needed.
“You need to order ahead of time to make sure they can meet the upcoming year’s demand,” explained Sue Dees, Central Illinois Native Plant Society. She encourages everyone to “help us get the word out and put your order in soon.” Milkweeds are available for purchase by the flat through the Milkweed Market. Preorder for Spring 2019 now.
Milkweed Market is also providing the opportunity to obtain FREE milkweed plugs for qualifying non-profits and schools.
100,000 FREE milkweeds will be distributed to qualifying, large scale (2+ acre) restoration projects. Follow this link for more information on how to apply for this grant.
Schools and educational non-profit organizations can also apply to receive one free flat of milkweed for Spring 2019. More information on applying here.
