In 1993, Dr. Robert & Patricia Merrill donated their a 7.49 acre property in Sangamon County to the Illinois Audubon Society. They were relocating to a warmer ecosystem and wished that this parcel be put into protection to be used as a wildlife sanctuary.
Dr. Merrill kept an extensive list of wildlife that he had observed on the property. Although he noted that the list was only partial, it included black billed cuckoo, yellow billed cuckoo, great crested flycatcher, evening grosbeak, horned lark, snow bunting, river otter, black racers, squirrels, mice frogs and toads.
