The Helen & Betty Bremer Wildlife Sanctuary is located at Hillsboro, about 50 miles south of Springfield, in Montgomery County. It was given to the Illinois Audubon Society in 1977 by Helen and Betty Bremer, who wished to preserve the farm which had been in their family since 1857. The goal at the sanctuary is to improve the forest, savanna, and grassland habitat for native species. Ongoing restoration is performed by dedicated volunteer stewards and 66-acres have been converted to pollinator habitat.
Participants will hike 3-4 miles on flat, mowed trails to observe birds, wildflowers and insects throughout the 203-acre sanctuary. There will be time to tour the educational displays in the barn and learn about the history and management of the property. A picnic lunch is included.
