Floodplains are home to a variety of habitats including prairie, wetland, open water and bottomland forest. These many habitats house a variety of bird species including numerous songbirds, waterfowl and raptors during winter and spring migration. Join us as we tour the Nature Institute and Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary.
The Nature Institute has been managing more than 450 acres of land along the Mississippi River floodplain for over 40 years. Many miles of trails wander through a variety of floodplain habitats. Nearby, the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary (managed by National Audubon Society) is 3,700 acres of prairie, wetland, open water and bottomland forest at the junction of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. Over 8.5 miles of trails meander through the sanctuary which provide viewing opportunities of many of these species.
Everyone will meet at The Nature Institute (2213 S Levis Ln, Godfrey, IL 62035) at 8:00 a.m. Please prepare to hike around 5-7 miles (for the day) on level ground to identify species. Spotting scopes could be helpful for some waterfowl species and we will have two for the party. Feel free to bring your own scope and binoculars, but please be prepared to carry your gear and other necessary items as needed.
