Oakwood Bottoms All-Bird Survey Project

The Oakwood Bottoms Project is a long-term monitoring program developed by conservation partners to collect survey data on avian use in response to habitat improvements undertaken at Oakwood Bottoms.

Ducks Unlimited has been working with the US Forest Service in Shawnee National Forest to enhance the health and resiliency of 700-acres of bottomland hardwood forest habitat located within the ~4,500 acre Oakwood Bottoms between 2015 and 2017.

A grant awarded to Ducks Unlimited from the National Forest Foundation helped to establish a permanent survey route to collect avian data in a consistent and systematic fashion thorough out all seasons and for future years.

Working together, the Uof I Natural History Survey, Southern Illinois Audubon and Illinois Audubon Society initiated the Oakdwood Bottoms All-Bird Survey Project and have identified 20 survey points, marked with signs, instructing citizen scientists on how to conduct surveys at each location.
