Martha Sojka

Martha is inspired by nature and intrigued by the interconnectedness of systems that sustain life. She began a career in environmental research at Argonne National Lab studying the role of mycorrhizal fungi and carbon sequestration in prairie soil and later pursued studies in urban planning and policy. Today she works in community development and continues to weave environmental principles and sustainable practices into work and home life. Martha enjoys the outdoors including hiking and biking and more recently – birdwatching!

Presentation Information

Title

Creating Healthy Habits and Habitats

Subject(s)

Description

Habitat loss is a critical environmental issue and a great threat to birds. As we modify the land around us for development, we degrade natural habitat and reduce biodiversity. Habitat preservation, conservation and restoration is needed, and can help even in small spaces such as our backyards. In 2022, Martha had her homesite certified by the Illinois Audubon Society as a Bird & Butterfly Sanctuary and has worked with others interested in certification including community groups and churches. The presentation will cover the certification process, what it takes to create habitat and what kind of sustainable practices we can do to help nature and wildlife.
